Even before the pandemic, I had already begun a nightly ritual of taking solitary walks “to meet Stanislav.” Stanislav was a statue of a steelworker, erected in a particularly Soviet looking park that was supposed to be a rose garden. He was built to honor the working men and women who were killed or injured on the job. He almost looks like an Arian version of a screenprinted wobbly poster. I would walk through December rain, across a Roman Catholic churchyard, down a street of uneven sidewalks, overhung by sycamores, walking in jagged detours to avoid pools of standing runoff, to the edge of the open park for my nightly meeting.
